Hiram Sutcliffe (1862-1931) was the founding father of the family business.
He began by selling from his home on High Street, Farsley, in the late 1800s, and then he traded from horse and cart. Eventually, he purchased a small property on Town Street, close to the shop's current position, and Sutcliffe's has maintained this presence in the village since 1900.
As the business expanded, for many years Sutcliffe's traded from 107 Town Street, moving next door to its present position at 109 Town Street in 1970.
Hiram and Miriam Sutcliffe handed the business over to successive generations as follows:-
(i) Raymond and Martha Ann
(ii) Sydney and Patricia Mary
(iii) Raymond John and Tracy Ann
Raymond and Tracy, together with children Amy Ann, Alice Rose and Richard Sydney, now continue to run the family business in the manner that it was founded.
The shop houses photographs of historical family importance, a cherished acknowledgement of its past. Indeed, the proud sense of a family at work, in service to the Farsley community, is central to its work ethic and longstanding presence on Farsley Town Street since 1900. Sutcliffe's vans, like Hiram's horse and cart, provide groceries to customers throughout the area.
For Sutcliffe's (est. 1900), the customer comes first. Nothing is too much to ask.
